WAYWARD NATURE 2010 – 2014
This is my most recent work, which is more abstract, but the mixture of order and randomness found in Nature is still present.
WAYWARD NATURE 2007 – 2010
This work was created after my trip to Japan. Japanese aesthetics are the source of inspiration for these works. They are painted on paper rather than panels
NATURE IMAGINED 2006 – 2014
These paintings were a continuation of the work begun in 1981. Largely inspired by Nature and natural patterns – fractals and Fibonacci plant forms.
NATURE IMAGINED 1981 – 1989:
Between 1981-88, I explored natural patterns by using controlled accidents in paint over a detailed line drawing. Subjects included the patterns of sunflowers, pebbles, flowing water and trees
NATURAL PATTERNS 1981 – 1983:
Between 1981-83, I explored natural patterns using computers. I worked with Robert Dixon who generated the Fractal and Fibonacci forms.
ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM 1989 – 1991
These paintings were my first experiments painting on paper as a support influenced by Sam Francis – a huge step away from earlier work. Gestural elements in intense colour mixed with wet-in-wet effects.
ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM 2006 -2014:
At this time, I began to experiment with abstraction again but these paintings are related to my ‘wayward nature’ paintings and use Nature as their starting point.
FANTASTIC REALISM 1998 – 2005
The window as an iconic element – with the influence of Rudolph Hausner’s Adam paintings. I was loosely affiliated with a group of like-minded imaginative painters centred on the work of the Viennese painter Ernst Fuchs.
VISIONARY 1976 – 1984:
My visionary paintings are mostly mandalas – a cosmic map found in Hindu & Tibetan Tantric Art. My mandalas have the six-fold symmetry of snowflakes rather than the traditional four of Hindu and Tibetan Tankas
PEOPLE IMAGINED:
Urban fantasies projected on the landscape of a face – urban characters from my reading and listening, then later, primal Africans with their amazing sculptural presence and connection to the ‘primal’.
FAR EASTERN AND DECORATIVE ART 1972 –
Art Orientated, the company I helped to form in 1972 produced oriental inspired fine art objects, lacquerware and paintings on silk inspired by my fascination with Chinese landscape painting.
